Prior to founding Abbey Capital, Tony was a co-founder of Allied Irish Capital Management (AICM), a Dublin-based CTA, in conjunction with Allied Irish Banks.
He helped to grow AICM to become one of the largest European CTAs, with funds under management growing from an initial $50 million to in excess of $1.4 billion.
Tony has more than 25 years’ investment experience in the managed futures industry. He is recognized and acknowledged as a leader in the industry globally. He is a regular guest speaker at alternative investment industry conferences.
Tony graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Masters in Business Studies with Finance from University College Dublin, Ireland.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Research Director at Abbey Capital
As Research Director, and voting member of the Investment Committee, Mick manages and oversees Abbey Capital’s research and risk management processes as well as portfolio construction. He joined Abbey Capital in May 2002 after fifteen years as a trader and manager of trading teams.
Prior to joining Abbey Capital, Mick was a Director at AICM from 1998 to 2002. While at AICM, he worked in a trading capacity and also on product research and risk management. Previously, Mick was the Head of FX and European Interest Rate Trading at Bank of Ireland in Dublin from 1997 to 1998. Prior to that, Mick was Treasurer and EVP at Bank of Ireland’s New York Branch, where he ran the trading and sales operation from 1994 to 1997. In 1992, he became Head of Interest Rate trading at the bank. Mick initially joined the Treasury Division of Bank of Ireland in 1984 where he traded foreign exchange and interest rate markets on a proprietary basis.
Mick graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Commerce from University College Galway and holds an ACMA qualification.
Chief Operating Officer at Abbey Capital
In his role as Chief Operating Officer Andrew oversees all operational aspects of the business. He is also head of Operational Due Diligence and a voting member of the Investment Committee.
Before joining Abbey Capital in 2005, Andrew was Financial Controller at WestLB Covered Bond Bank where he led the Financial Control and Risk Management functions in the bank as it grew from start up to a bank with a €7 billion short and long-term rated debt issuance program. Andrew started his career in banking and investment at WestLB Ireland where he was responsible for all Regulatory and Group Financial reporting. Andrew is a fellow member of the ACCA, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Business and Accounting from the Institute of Technology, Tallaght, Ireland.
Chief Financial Officer at Abbey Capital
Peter is responsible for all Audit, Financial and Tax areas of the Abbey Capital Group of companies and its’ funds. Peter has been a key driver of this part of Abbey Capital’s business since he joined in 2003 and is a member of the Senior Management team. Peter is a senior member of the Operational Due Diligence team and performs operational due diligence on all service providers (CTA, brokers and administrator). He also serves on the Credit Committee and Remuneration Committee.
Prior to joining Abbey Capital in 2003, Peter gained international fund experience working at Investment Fund Services (IFS), Dublin and Admiral Administration Ltd., Cayman Islands, He also spent 4 years in the late 90’s at KPMG where he led the audits at many global hedge funds along with large stockbroking and life insurance companies.
Peter has completed an Executive Leadership programme at Stanford Graduate School of Business. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from University College Galway and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Head of Research at Abbey Capital
John’s responsibilities include manager analysis and due diligence, on-going fundamental research, management of the analyst team and setting the research agenda for the company. As a voting member of the investment committee, John participates in all aspects of Abbey Capital’s manager appraisal activities.
John joined Abbey Capital in 2009 following completion of a M.Sc. in Financial Economics from the University College Cork (“UCC”) School of Economics. He also holds a B.Sc. in Finance from UCC in addition to holding the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (“CAIA”) qualification. John’s academic research focused on the application of regression analysis and the bootstrapping algorithm to fund performance and his work has been published in the Journal of Wealth Management.
Managing Director at Abbey Capital
In his role, Alan oversees market and portfolio analysis and research thought pieces. As a voting member of the investment committee Alan participates in all aspects of Abbey Capital’s manager appraisal activities.
Before joining Abbey Capital in 2012, Alan was Investment Director with Ulster Bank Wealth, where he was responsible for investment strategy and asset allocation. Prior to that, he was Investment Strategist at Allied Irish Capital Management. Alan started his career at Bank of America, London, as a technical analyst and proprietary trader in the FX division. He subsequently worked with Bank of America in Hong Kong and Singapore as Senior Research Analyst in FX, before joining BNP Paribas as a fixed income strategist in Emerging Markets in London.
Alan is a CFA holder with a BA in Economics from Trinity College Dublin, an MSc in Investment Management from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and an MBA from University College Dublin.
Managing Director at Abbey Capital
As Managing Director Aodhagán is responsible for Business Development and Sales for Abbey Capital. He acts as primary liaison for institutional clients, across Europe, North America and the Middle East.
Before joining Abbey Capital in 2006, Aodhagán was a Senior Project Manager for Datalex plc., where Aodhagán managed multi-million dollar projects for major international blue-chip airline clients. From 1998 to 2001, Aodhagán worked as a product specialist and consultant with Misys, focusing on the trade finance and retail banking sectors.
Aodhagán recently completed a Strategic Marketing Management programme at Stanford Graduate School of Business. He holds a Master of Business Studies (M.I.S.) and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from University College Dublin.
Chief Technology Officer at Abbey Capital
Derek leads Abbey Capital’s technology group and is responsible for all aspects of the development, operation and management of our systems and infrastructure. Derek is also a member of the Operational Due Diligence team.
Derek joined Abbey Capital in March 2011 from Tradefacilitate Ltd., an EU-validated provider of paper-free import export solutions, where he was CTO and responsible for product strategy, development and delivery processes, and for making their software-as-a-service offering market-ready. Prior to this, Derek spent four years at Daiwa Securities Global Asset Services in Dublin as Head of Technology where he was responsible for all aspects of the company’s technology operation including software, infrastructure and business continuity management. Derek held a variety of software development leadership roles prior to this in the digital imaging, eLearning and performance management industries.
Derek holds a B.Sc. in Applied Computing from Waterford Institute of Technology and an MBA from the Smurfit Business School at UCD, specialising in Marketing and HR.
Chief Risk Officer at Abbey Capital
Michael Blighe is the Chief Risk Officer of Abbey Capital Limited.
As Abbey Capital’s Chief Risk Officer, Michael is responsible for ensuring an enterprise-wide culture of risk management, the identification and resolution of risks and building the company’s capability to monitor, anticipate and respond to risks. Michael is a member of the Risk Committee, Credit Committee and Operational Due Diligence team and has in-depth knowledge of the major risks affecting the funds managed by Abbey Capital.
Prior to joining Abbey Capital in 2008, Michael was a Software Developer with Bank of Ireland. Michael holds a PhD in Image & Video Processing from Dublin City University, a M.Sc. in Applied Computing and a B.Sc. in Information Systems from Trinity College Dublin. Michael is also a PRMIA certified Risk Manager.
Head of Finance at Abbey Capital
David is responsible for managing the Finance and Back office areas of Abbey Capital and is also a member of the Operational Due Diligence team, where he performs operational due diligence on all service providers (CTA, brokers and administrator).
Prior to joining Abbey Capital in 2014, David was a senior manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dublin. David worked with an extensive range of alternative clients promoted by European, US and Asian investment managers. David has also gained international alternatives experience working at PricewaterhouseCoopers, New York.
David holds a BSc Finance degree from University College Cork and a Masters of Accounting in the UCD Michael Smurfit Business School. David is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland.
Head of Client Services at Abbey Capital
Sandra is responsible for managing the Client Services department in Abbey Capital. The Dublin based team are the primary point of contact for client requests and queries. Sandra is responsible for ensuring Abbey Capital’s clients continually receive the highest level of service.
Prior to joining Abbey Capital in 2009, Sandra was a project manager for SDL International where she was responsible for managing projects across global teams for a number of US, European and Asian clients.
Sandra holds a B.Bs in International Business & Japanese from Dublin City University. Sandra is a fluent Japanese speaker.
Senior Vice President
Brian Opatosky is a Senior Vice President at Abbey Capital (US) LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Abbey Capital Limited.
Brian is responsible for Abbey Capital’s North American Client Services Group, with specific focus on U.S. based distribution relationships.
Before joining Abbey Capital in 2012, Brian was a Product Manager within the Alternative Investments Group at UBS Wealth Management Americas, where he was responsible for the development and management of select single manager hedge funds, hedge fund of funds and managed futures products offered on the UBS platform. Prior to that, Brian was an independently employed project manager specializing in enterprise wide projects that focused on business process improvement and control initiatives. Earlier in his career, Brian held consulting roles at both Arthur Andersen Business Consulting and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Brian holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Pace University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Monmouth University. Additionally, Brian holds a Project Management Professional Certification credential from the Project Management Institute.
